Sat 4 Jan Leucistic Vanellus miles Nelson Road, Smithton Leucistic Masked Lapwing on grassy verge beside the road. White with light tan edging to feathers on crown and wing. Normal yellow wattle and eye colour, red/pink legs. Fiona Hume Tue 31 Dec Latham’s Snipe Rattler Hill, Weldborough Single bird disturbed from reedy area 100m west of summit. Bill Scott-Young, Leanne Sherriff and Sue Foster Australasian Bittern Lunnawanna, Bruny Island At a new years eve BBQ we were treated to 2, possibly 3 bitterns calling fairly constantly from 6.30 to 8.30pm. The closest was probably within 50 metres but in thick tea tree scrub along a creek bed. Our hosts report that they are regularly very noisy in the mornings. On private land.
