Fruit-doves (and similar) in Victoria

Hi birders,

I note with interest the report on Birdline of a Rose-crowned Fruit-dove reported from Lake Tyers in the east of Victoria this week. Unfortunately the bird was dead, but presumably had been alive at some stage prior to it being found! This report led me to think about what other reports of fruit-doves and similar species there may be from Victoria – but after doing a bit of research I must admit that I am unsure of which species have actually been reported in Victoria.

I have listed the research that I have done below, but am interested in any recent records of these species in Victoria.

Suburb Fruit-dove

Pizzey & Knight (7th edition) says “casual … c. and w. Vic” – I can only imagine that this is an error, and should read something like “casual e. Vic”.

Morecome (2nd edition) suggests eastern and southern coastal Victoria, which I can only imagine is quite optimistic.

The only record I can find in the new Atlas (using Birdata) is from Bairnsdale. The old Atlas suggests eastern Victoria.

Rose-crowned Fruit-dove

P&K7 says “casual… s. Vic and Tas”

Morecome2 suggests coastal south-eastern Victoria.

The Atlas, both old and new from Birdata, has no records for Victoria.

Wompoo Fruit-dove

P&K7 does not mention Victoria. Morecome2 does not suggest Victoria. The atlas has no records for Victoria.

Emerald Dove

P&K7 says “casual… s. Vic and sw. WA”

Morecome2 suggests coastal south-eastern Victoria.

The new atlas has no records. The old atlas indicates a sighting in the Lakes Entrance area – I am not sure when, though.

Brown Cuckoo-dove

P&K7 says “Casual e. Vic. (Mallacoota Inlet, Bairnsdale)”

Morecome2 indicates scarce in the SE part of its range which includes far eastern Victoria.

The atlas, old and new, has records from eastern Victoria.

I also note that there is a Birdline record of this species from 2007.

Thanks in advance!
