I’m planning to purchase one of the current Australian field guide apps on my iPhone. I particularly want good quality songs/calls which are easily accessed – as well as all the other expected features of course. And while cost isn’t a major factor it is always one of the considerations. Which one would you recommend – and why? Thanks. Richard Richard NOWOTNY Port Melbourne, Victoria M: 0438 224 456

Hi all, I agree with John that the first Masked Owl call on Pizzey is a Barn Owl. The second Masked Owl call is a slightly atypical call. I don’t have the Morcombe app. but I know that Dave Stewart has a good variety of Masked Owl calls on his CDs and I presume that these are used on the Morcombe app. I would also go for Pizzey over Morcombe for the illustrations but many people find Morcombe’s field guide more user-friendly. They also work even if you’ve got your phone on silent (the Pizzey calls don’t, for me at least – a minor thing but it drives me nuts at times). That said, the Pizzey calls are perfectly serviceable, though I notice that the first Masked Owl recording is a Barn Owl Cheers, John

We have both. Morcombe was, of course, the first one and it took a while to get used to Pizzey which seemed not quite as easy to use. Now we probably go to Pizzey first, especially when we have some of the harder birds because the photos can be very helpful. Bev, who can not only hear calls but is brilliant at identifying them, prefers Morcombe’s calls. Both are good and we’re glad we have both. Peter Morgan

Hi Richard Like others, I have both apps, and find Pizzey and Knight much more comprehensive and detailed, but Morcombe easier to use for quick access to calls. Martin – what errors have you spotted in Morcombe? Mona

Richard I have Morecombe on my iPhone and Pizzey and Knight on my iPad. I find Morecombe to be more user friendly but that may be because I’m more familiar with it. The songs/calls on Morecombe seem to be more comprehensive. If you can, get both. Cheers David On Mon, Jan 12, 2015 at 1:56 PM, Richard Nowotny < richard.nowotny@bigpond.com> wrote:

Richard, I have both Morecombe & Stewart, and Pizzey & Knight on my iPad and iPod Touch. Very handy combination. Just a pity you can’t have both open on the one screen Carl Clifford
