Austral Fisheries has a PR promotional advertisement in the latest Weekend Australian magazine:-
“At Austral fisheries our constant focus is on the sustainable catching of fish, not wild birds. Our operational standards are set so high that if an Austral fisheries boat catches a single protected seabird off Macquarie Island, our entire season of fishing has to be abandoned at enormous financial cost to us. We don’t fish by longline when seabirds are breeding or feeding their young chicks.” etc etc.
Good to see this company is trying to do the right thing and is environmentally aware. The longline statement might be a bit hard to comply with given that for Wanderers and Royals the breeding, incubation and chick rearing lasts for a year, which is why they breed biennially.
Also of interest is the accompanying artwork which shows two distant Black-brows with a photograph of a Waved Albatross superimposed. The Waved Albatross’ range is confined to the eastern tropical Pacific between the Galapagos where it breeds, and the coast of Peru and Ecuador. Rather a long way from Macquarie and the Southern Ocean.!
