Great Central Road

Planning a trip from WA next winter. Is there anyone who can provide info about birding along the road, or any other tips for young players. Thanks – Maris

G’day Marvis I drove the Great Central Road from Laverton to Uluru 20 years ago in a 14 year old Subaru. No great challenges on the 1000 km of unsealed road, but as others have said, it depends on when the grader last went through. There was fuel stops at 300 km intervals, so I took a gerry can for a contingency. Also carried plenty of water. It was a great drive. If you have the opportunity, it is worth doing the Mereenie Loop from Kings Canyon round to Palm Valley and then on to Glen Helen … Regards, Laurie. Maris I took the Great Central Road from Uluru to the Heather Highway in May. We camped and bought fuel at Kaltukatjara (Docker River) and Warburton. Warburton is a gated caravan park and Kaltukatjara is bush camping with toilets, depending on the availability of water. Warakurna roadhouse does good takeaway lunches but it is very difficult to stop there without buying at least one of the superb Aboriginal paintings. Giles Weather Station is worth a visit. We were on a fairly tight schedule and my travelling companions aren’t birders so my observations on the GCR were casual and not terribly exciting. The Grey Falcon on the Carnegie Glen-Ayle Road a few days after leaving the GCR was a different matter!!! Cheers David Sent from my iPad

Hi Maris, I travelled the GC Rd August last year from Sandy Blight Rd to the Tjirrkarli turn-off west of Warburton. The only spot we stopped along that section was the creek crossing just west of Warburton, the birds were coming in for water and sitting on the road drinking. The spot I would highly recommend, if you have the time ohs the Bungabiddy waterhole, off the Sandy Blight road. Had Spinifex Pigeons, Painted Finches, Honeyeaters practically around your feet. One recommendation though, try not to travel the road between Warburton and Warakuna of a night unless you have to, lots of roos and the road is not necessarily in good condition unless the grader had been through. If you would like any more info, I’d be happy to dig out my notes.
