Hi Ross,
your posting made me go to see the Crested/Oriental Honey Buzzard, finally. Thank you for the stimulus. I am a hopeless twitcher – I believe the bird had been there since late last year, and the location is just about half an hour’s drive from my place.
I went to the Recreation Centre, as instructed, and after only 10 minutes heard a distant single note of a Little Eagle, i.e. from quite high up, and soaring with it was the Honey Buzzard, which was slightly larger, with greater wingspan than the Little Eagle. Nevertheless the Little Eagle mobbed occasionally the Honey Buzzard, but both birds did not take it seriously.
Observation time: 11:35–11:45 am.
Temperature was around 40˚C, with a top of 42˚C on that day.
Happy birding,
Jonny

Hi Sue,
Not sure if anyone has got back to you yet but the CHB was spotted this morning at Lake Joondalup.
Best viewing is usually from next to (northern side) the Recreation Centre (on Scenic Drive, east side of lake).
You might also be interested to hear that a Eurasian Hobby was seen yesterday and this morning at South Lake (northern corner of reserve on North Lake Rd) which is about 20 mins south of the Airport.
Cheers,
Ross

I will be briefly in Perth next Fri 12 Feb arriving late afternoon and
departing before daylight the next day. Has anyone seen the Crested Honey
Buzzard since 31 Jan which is the last record I can find on eBird? If the
bird is still around, as someone who has never birded in Perth, any tips on
where best to look at Lake Joondalup will be greatly appreciated as we will
be dashing (within the speed limit of course) in a hire car straight from
the airport.
Many thanks
Sue

When I was recently working on the eastern Dorrigo Plateau near Coffs Harbour I observed an unusual raptor. It was flying away from me and appeared to be quite large (harrier size or larger). It was grey on the upperparts and the rump was paler (light grey or white). The wings were long and were held flat and the primaries had prominent thick dark bars similar to the Pacific Baza and the Honey-Buzzard in Ian’s photo. I checked the Crested Honey-Buzzard text in my copy of the Handbook of the Birds of the World but the colouration of the upperparts didn’t seem right for that species. I did read that the plumage of the Honey-Buzzard can be quite variable. I am not claiming that the bird that I saw was a Honey-Buzzard but it was certainly like nothing I had seen before so I am just seeking comment from others on Birding-aus. It may have been an old male Swamp Harrier, explaining the whitish rump, but the wings were held flat as it flew away and I think that the wings were too long for that species. I did consider Spotted Harrier but the primaries in that species are dark tipped not barred. Regards Greg Dr Greg. P. There where actually three off them together, one I think was a young bird. To have it fly over head so close was a nice way to end the year. If someone could confirm it I would greatly appreciate that. Happy Birding and all the best for the New Year to everyone. Regards Ian Churchward.

Hi Ian, I first reported 3 buzzards on the 23rd of December. A very nice pic. Daniel Mantle (who I have cc’ed into this email) is very keen on getting images and any other info from your observation, or anybody elses, as he and others are looking to write up a publication on these birds.
