One of the unsung and unknown Australians, largely. I’m sure many of you know him but I suspect many don’t. I’ve given a bit of a biography of him from books and articles I’ve been reading. Do you know of him and what he did… and he was much more than just an ornithologist. Chris Shaw seashore@internode.on.net Mobile +61 (0) 409 675912 http://blog.topburds.com/top-birds-everyfing/

Thanks for the article, Chris. What a fascinating pioneer! He also worked closely with Charles Bean. Interesting that when he offered his services at the start of WWII, both the British and Australian military rejected him because of his age – so he worked extensively for the US military! Apart from a couple of biographies, there are dozens of newspaper articles about him – have a look at Trove (my favourite time-sink) http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper How have we neglected this outstanding pioner? I don’t recall his name coming up in Australian history courses. Maybe he should be the subjevct of the next Fitzsimons book … Russell Woodford Geelong
