It is disturbing to see a press release issued by Queensland Government, wrongly acknowledging a “team of scientists” for the rediscovery of Night Parrot. The full credit for rediscovery of Night Parrot all goes to John Young and nobody else. It was because of Johns ornithological and bush skills, his incredible experience and relentless determination that the bird was found in Western Qld. While it is encouraging to see funding grants to support conservation of Night Parrot, John Young should be the central figure managing this conservation project.. see: http://statements.qld.gov.au/Statement/2015/11/24/state-government-commits-400000-to-protect-elusive-night-parrot

I was delighted to see Bush Heritage now has a much fuller acknowledgement of John’s efforts and success at: http://www.bushheritage.org.au/what_we_do/protect-animals/night-parrot So donate if you possibly can! BTW there is a longer video of Steve Murphy releasing a night parrot at Michael Norris

Unless the media have been sent the release separately, there appears to be no information pack to go with it, David. Peter Shute

Yes, I agree that John Young should receive proper acknowledgement in the media release. I notice that the ABC news article that was published online earlier today mentions John. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-11-24/rare-night-parrot-gets-boost-with-5m-p lan-to-protect-species/6970098. While I agree that John Young should be acknowledged, press releases are normally short and catchy. They are often accompanied by background information for media outlets to use if they wish. I would be disappointed if John’s devotion, hard grind and outstanding achievement wasn’t recognised in any background information provided by the QLD government. As for a role in managing the conservation project, it is my understanding that John has other priorities that hopefully include finding more Night Parrots. I couldn’t see that. I sent messages via Annastacia Palaszczuk and Steven Miles own pages, accessible from: http://www.cabinet.qld.gov.au/ministers.aspx Peter Shute

That’s odd, because he usually gets at least a mention. I wonder if whoever wrote the government press release just assumed John was part of the team that’s working with the birds now. Is it possible to get government press releases corrected? It would be good if the error wasn’t replicated in all the newspapers. I notice that the article about the funding on the ABC site yesterday did mention John. Peter Shute

Exactly! Very well said and I agree with every word. It is very disturbing, frustrating and actually infuriating to read that “press release.” How does, or can, anyone forget who found the Night Parrots in the first place? How, and to what end is this seemingly continuing misinformation (or out right omission) of John’s accomplishment being spread? I may be naive, but I honestly don’t get it. R.
