Hi All, I was posting a message to my wife’s cousin, who has just joined an owl monitoring project and mentioned that we had seen a race of the S Boobook in Dunsborough. I told him that we have 4 races of Boobook in Australia but I’m not sure if that is still correct. Do we still have Southern Boobook in Tasmania now that the former race has been given species status? All the best with birding, Patrick Sent from my iPhone

G’day Patrick. The answer is that it depends. Some taxonomies (Clements for example) treat all Australian Boobooks as the same species with several subspecies. The IOC list (which I follow) treats the Tasmanian birds as a separate species – the Morpork. This species also includes subspecies in New Zealand, Norfolk Island and Lord Howe Island (where extinct). At least a few Tassy Moreporks winter on the mainland and I had one in my garden in Hamilton, sw Vic in 2013 for a month (http://jenniferspryausbirding.blogspot.com.au/search?q=morepork). So choose a taxonomy and you will have your answer! Cheers Steve
