trip planning question – Sydney to Gold Coast

Ok folks – I’m looking for suggestions. I have to drive from Sydney to the Gold Coast in a few weeks for a conference. I have two days to do it and aim to arrive early enough to do some birding on the second day in the afternoon. So i’m wondering if anyone has suggestions of where to stop on the way up that would allow somewhere good to make the most of a later afternoon/early morning for birding and especially bird photography. I’m not after any specific species although anything not normally found around Sydney would be great, and raptors and any overwintering waders would also be fantastic. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Cabin accommodation is planned for our place, Gibraltar Reserve, for later this year or early 2015. Dave I reckon if your coming up the Pacific Highway a possible stop might be at Iluka – a nice rainforest reserve there with a good bird list and Beach Stone Curlew a chance in the area. Lovely place to stay as well or nearby Yamba. A little further up the track is Evans Head – good coastal heath where Southern Emu-wren and Ground Parrot a chance. It would be good to get replies to David’s question coming to the whole list (thanks for doing that, Martin) because this is a route driven by a lot of readers (both locals and visitors). I must confess to a vested interest here: I’ll be driving my mother’s car back from Geelong to Brisbane for her in a couple of weeks, and I’m already doing some research on where to try to do a bit of birding en route. Places like Chiltern and Capertee come to mind as I will be travelling via the Hume and Pacific Highways this time (I’ve done both the Newell and New England Highways a number of times). I’ll be relying on the tools of the modern birder: birding-aus, eBird, Eremaea birdlines and several Facebook birding groups … and of course a couple of very useful birding apps!
