Dear Rob Reed See Steve Debus’ request below. Over to you. I wonder if the observer would care to elaborate on the claimed distinctive calls of Boobook race ocellata as a means of distinguishing it from other Boobook races. As far as I’m aware, only race lurida is alleged (on pretty flimsy evidence, e.g. HANZAB) to be distinguishable on voice from other adjacent mainland races. Sun 11 May Southern Boobook Sanamere Wetlands just north of Jardine River Ferry Northern Peninsular Area Cape York This bird has only been recorded on Eremaea north of the Jardine 3 times over 20 years (once dead and once heard only). In small trees in heath and wetlands approx. 4km north of ferry crossing. Came in to playback. I managed to get within 2m twice for lengthy views as it made it’s distinctive calls to confirm race ocellata. Rob Reed Grey Goshawk Tyto Wetlands Grey Goshawk near Osprey nest tree in Tyto Wetlands today. Bird moved three times without drawing harassment from other birds.
