White-Throated Nightjar/ Eungella HE sites, Queensland

As part of the successful BuffBBQ search around Mt Molloy I birded my way up and back from the Sunny Coast. Dipped out on Yellow Chat around Gladstone even with Henry Nix’s “best site” knowledge (the area is very dry) and Little Bittern at Tyto Wetlands but:

Located a White-throated Nightjar at Brooyar State Forest, near Gympie 01/12 (entry via Wide Bay Road, 12km north). The area is about 1km back from the camping area up the hill and near a cross road (initially located about 100m to the north west of the cross road in an open area, but flew to a more wooded area the north east after flushing. 26 08 45 / 152 32 39 (WGS 84) being the cooridinates of first sighting.

A bit belated but of interest was a Eungella HE on Schumanns Road on 23/11 (not a road oft mentioned in reports from the area, but info from the local Caravan Park owner). This site is about 2km from the town on Dalrymple, up a hilly dirt road to the left (signposted) and past Dairy Farms until you come to a rainforest area (about 1.5km along). In 20 minutes and in the first 200m of the forest I had the HE, a Regent Bowerbird and a Black-faced Monarch together with 10 other species. Pays to listen to a local as 4 hours and 40km of travel down Dalrymple and Snake Road in the mud, rain and fog produced a few probable calls but very little else the previous day!
