Where are the Pallid Cuckoos this year?

Hi I’m curious – are you? Normally by mid-August around where I live the air is thick with the calls of Pallid Cuckoos. One can barely move through the countryside edgewise without bumping into a few. It’s nearly October and I haven’t heard one around home, or in various other places up to Kyneton or down to Melton/Bacchus Marsh (southern edge of central Victoria) where I’ve been in the last month. There are a few bronze-cuckoos about (Shining and Horsfield’s) and small numbers of Fan-tailed Cuckoos (including night-calling birds with this full moon). Interested to hear from anyone who does have Pallid Cuckoos arriving/arrived, or is this just a really odd year for the species? cheers ++++++++++++ Dr Lawrie Conole Tylden Vic 3444 Australia lconole [at] gmail.com

  2. What’s Pallid Cuckoo for “do you MIND?” —–Original Message—– Sent: Monday, September 28, 2015 5:19 PM Cc: birding-aus@birding-aus.org Maris may have some truth in her “Sunny West” statement. We have just driven from Melbourne to and from Perth and Albany and heard Pallids en route. I have not heard any around Melbourne in the 9 years I have lived here. I recall hearing a nature talk on radio 50 years ago saying spraying in Vic was reducing their numbers in parts of Vic. We heard them at Merridin, and Meckering, and probably other places but I have not got all the sightings into the computer yet. We saw and heard many more fan-tailed Cuckoo across South and Western Australia. We even saw a Sacred Kingfisher watching closely from 1 metre; a pair copulating on the power line at Cheyne Beach, East of Albany. 4. They have been as vocal as usual for about the last month in Carwoola (outside Canberra) about 500km NE of where Google Earth reckons Tylden is!. Martin Martin Butterfield http://franmart.blogspot.com.au/ On 28 September 2015 at 12:08, Maris Lauva <latvian_maris@hotmail.com> wrote:

  5. Hi, Several seen and heard two weeks ago in Capertee Valley, NSW, (and at least one a week ago in Round Hill) so at least they are on their way. Maybe the cold front of last week put brakes on to their migration? Might be a bit early still. No sign of Trillers, Songlarks (Rufous or Brown) either and the Reed-Warblers have only just arrived. I might need to get out more of course.
