Night Parrot Photographed

Hi All,

John Young definitely deserves some congratulations.

This latest achievement looks like it will bring him well out of the ‘blue’ (remember the Blue-fronted Fig Parrot saga??) and into the light of the ‘night’. Excuse the corny ‘tabloidesque’ puns…

After all that talk of using trained sniffer dogs, trail cameras etc. All it took was a birding veteran with a good ear for bird calls, and a spotlight.

I have spent hours at night playing the calls of Ground Parrots across the spinifex flats of the north-west highlands and southern gulf region, hoping to get a call back. John has definitely stumbled on gold hear by recording the call of the Night Parrot itself. I wonder what price he will be asking from people interested in obtaining copies of the sound file?

No doubt government bodies, consultants and conservationists will all want to get in on the action and out into the spinifex country, playing the sound file to find out just where, and how many of these little parrots still remain.

This is a great achievement for conservation and may help us understand about more about this rare species and give a chance at trying to protect it.

Good work John!

Regards,
