Melbourne sparrows

Am briefly in downtown Melbourne, outside the Town Hall, and amazed at the number of House Sparrows.

None in Sydney or Brisbane .

What has Melbourne got that they don’t ?

Cheers. Michael

The use of unleaded petrol wouldn't explain the big difference in populations between the eastern and western suburbs of Melbourne.Peter ShuteOn Wed, 6 Feb 2019 at 12:54, Tony Palliser <tonyp@bigpond.net.au> wrote:

A friend of mine from the UK told me that a study in the UK revealed that there may be a link with the use of unleaded petrel and the reduction in sparrow populations.   As it has been noted that the introduction of unleaded petrel has coincided with the decline and furthermore it was also noted that roadside sparrows are the first to go. Not sure how much truth there is to this but certainly high traffic areas appear to be hit hard. Cheers,Tony <HR>
