Macaws and Black Cockies, Sydney

Hi All,

Regarding a recent report on Birding-aus about a flock of 10 Blue and Gold Macaws on the loose at Cowan.

They are indeed entrepreneur John Singleton’s Birds. Many sydney siders will know of his estate in Mt White, north of Sydney. Not many will know of his extensive bird collection. http://www.smh.com.au/news/cbd/singo-and-his-birds-and-pigs/2005/12/04/1133631145995.html(a 2005 article about him and his birds).

A student in some of my classes at Macquarie University lives at Singleton’s estate where she’s employed to look after his birds and train them to fly free around his property. She has talked about his huge collection of birds which includes Red-tailed Black Cockatoos, Scarlet, Blue & Yellow Macaws, Yellow-tailed and Carnaby’s Black Cockatoos.

Apparently a lot of them associate with the wild Black Cockatoos of the area and form large flocks, which would explain the recent sightings reported to Bird Line NSW.

Regards,
