Would the following be correct??? I’m trying to make sense of where this bird is really at.!!!! The Koel that we all see & hear in eastern Australia is the Australian Koel which is a subspecies of the Pacific Koel. The Koel seen in the west (Indian Ocean area) is the Asian Koel – usually reported from either Christmas Is, Cocos-Keeling &/or Ashmore Reef. Can anyone add to this assumption? Does anyone have any idea why this change was made (and by whom)? It seems to me that we have only recently changed from Common Koel to Eastern Koel so another change is a pain. I am sure (but don’t have time to check) that different taxonomies – C&B, BirdLife, Clements etc – may treat this – and other species – differently. No right answers! It’s quite complicated. According to Clements Australian Koel (Eudynamys cyanocephalus) is a full species separate from all other Koels, and Pacific Koel (Eudynamys scolopaceus [orientalis Group]) is a subspecies group within Asian Koel (Eudynamys scolopaceus). In contrast, IOC has the two Australian taxa (cyanocephalus and subcyanocephalus) as subspecies of Pacific Koel (Eudynamys orientalis). According to the IOC 4.1 list, Asian Koel (*Eudynamys scolopaceus*) gets as far as Borneo and the Lesser Sundas. Pacific Koel (*Eudynamys orientalis*) has a subspecies (thus not split) *cyanocephalus* with range “n Queensland to s New South Wales” and another ssp *subcyanocephalus* with range “nw Australia to nw Queensland” However – as my recent query on Heuglin’s Gull in Thailand shows – the IOC is not always correct – and a different taxonomy may give different answers! DIfferent ssp of this also occur in the Indonesian archipelago and I guess either species could occur in the northern parts of our domain! So where does “Eastern Koel” fit in? That’s the name used in the Pizzey and Knight app and the Morcombe app. Peter Shute _______________________________________________ Birding-Aus mailing list Birding-Aus@birding-aus.org To change settings or unsubscribe visit: http://birding-aus.org/mailman/listinfo/birding-aus_birding-aus.org
My understanding (whether it’s correct is another story), is that Pacific is the usual one across the mainland, but Asian is the one most often reported from Christmas & Cocos John Sent from my iPhone _______________________________________________ Birding-Aus mailing list Birding-Aus@birding-aus.org To change settings or unsubscribe visit: http://birding-aus.org/mailman/listinfo/birding-aus_birding-aus.org
