Great Grasswren Air Safari – final update (ADVERTISEMENT?)

Hi all,

Well we’ve now succesfully completed our Great Grasswren Air Safari! Never
before has anyone seen all of Australia’s current Grasswren species (+ a
few subspecies thrown in for good measure) in one tour by private airplane.
Here’s a brief update on the spectacular final days.

Days 12-14: A strenuous but fantastic 3-day hike into the Northern
Territory’s wilderness guided by Mick Jerram and Mark Carter delivered no
less than 3 White-throated Grasswrens! On Day 12, the group left very early
in the morning to travel into the wilderness by 4WD vehicle. Then, a
challenging half-day climb into the rocky escarpments was followed by a
half-day hike on flat terrain (no trails!) At the end of the day, a bush
camp was set up on the shores of a beautiful waterhole. The morning of day
13, the search for White-throated Grasswren commenced in earnest. It didn’t
take long to track down these most elusive of all grasswrens, but good
views weren’t achieved until a couple of hours later. An elated group
returned to their bush camp and cooled down in the waterhole. The next
morning, the descent back into civilization was undertaken, followed by a
drive back to Darwin, but not until viewing Red Goshawk on the way back.
Other good birds seen during these days included Chestnut-quilled
Rock-pigeon, Little Shrike-thrush, Banded Fruit-dove and back in Darwin,
Rufous Owl. At the end of day 14, a final dinner was held in Darwin where
Peter Waanders joined the group to celebrate the outstanding achievement of
seeing all current Australian Grasswren species in one tour – while some
die-hards continued on to Alice Springs to pick up another subspecies of
Striated (“Sandhill”) and the local race of Dusky!
