Cowan Creek Reserve – North Turramurra – a new site for me

Hi all
Bobbin Head Rd in North Turramurra (Sydney northern suburbs) runs northwards along a ridge line with creeks on either side that run down to the tidal waters of the Hawkesbury. I have walked several times along the Lovers Jump Creek Tracks, which is the creek to the west of the ridge. This morning, from about 10:15-11:45am, my wife and I walked through Cowan Creek Reserve, which is the creek to the east of the ridge. We entered the reserve off Bedford Avenue and exited at Glengarry Avenue. The track follows the creek through open woodland and denser creek side areas for about 3kms. The more determined and/or organised could actually walk through to the Warrimoo Track in Ku-Ring-Gai NP and thence down to Bobbin Head itself (with a car shuttle or a long walk back up the hill). Although we did not see anything super special this morning (eg Brown Gerygones, Scarlet, Lewins & New Holland Honeyeaters, Brown & Striated Thornbills, White-throated Treecreepers, lots of Grey Fantails) it looks like it would reward a visit earlier in the day (cicadas quite loud this morning so birdsong was hard to pick up at times) and a closer look at much of the creek side vegetation, which looks good for roosting Powerful Owls (as are seen in similar habitat on the Lovers Jump Creek side).
Both tracks are within 10 minutes walk from my house, so I now have two good local spots to inspect when I don’t feel like going further afield.
Cheers
Tom Wilson
