In her late 80s my mother had cataract surgery on both eyes. One eye was much worse than the other and caused the surgeon a lot of trouble. He said that she must have had the cataract developing for a long time. I recalled that many years before I had obtained a new pair of binoculars. Mum of course had a look through them. Her comment was: “There must be something funny about these lenses, the colour is different between left and right. One is much yellower than the other.” I wish I had known that this is a classic cataract symptom. If she had that eye treated earlier, she might have been saved so much trouble and pain later. She was an enthusiastic watcher of birds in her garden right till her death aged 90.
