Reported by: Chris Baxter on Friday, November 1, 2013 ——————————————— Date: Tuesday, October 15, 2013 Location: Kangaroo Island Latham’s Snipe (Gallinago hardwickii) (1) feeding in freshwater shallows, roadside sedge swamp at Grace James Corner (Hog Bay Road-Elsegood Road intersection), c10 km sw of Kingscote, Kangaroo Island, 10 October 2013 Brown Goshawk (Accipiter fasciatus) (2) pair soaring on thermals above River Red Gum forested Duck Lagoon, Cygnet River, Kangaroo Island, 20 October 2013. Australian Hobby (Falco longipennis) (1) male low overhead at Duck Lagoon, Cygnet River, Kangaroo Island, 20 October 2013. Darter (Anhinga novaehollandiae) (2) one at Chapman River estuary, Dudley Peninsula, Kangaroo Island, 18 October 2013 one at Cygnet River, alongside KI Racecourse, Kangaroo Island, 18 October 2013 Short-tailed Shearwater (Puffinus tenuirostris) (1000+) Backstairs Passage between Penneshaw and Cape Jervis, Kangaroo Island, 31 October 2013 Reported by: Chris Baxter on Friday, November 1, 2013 ——————————————— Date: Monday, October 28, 2013 Location: Milang- Clayton Road White-necked Heron (Ardea pacifica) (11) Foraging in samphire along the lake-edge,3 km south of Milang. Unusually large gathering for this species. Locally quite common during winter-spring, but usually seen singly or in pairs. Approx 15kms north of Port Wakefield Bluebonnet (Northiella haematogaster) (8) Birds seen daily for the last week in trees along road side over a 3 km stretch. 2 birds have been killed when hit by vehicles. Pectoral Sandpiper (Calidris melanotos) (1) Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus) (1) Wood Sandpiper (Tringa glareola) (5) Black-tailed Godwit (Limosa limosa) (1) Pectral Sandpiper found with a small group of Sharptail Sandpipers. The Black-tailed Godwit was in the same vicinity, seen from the Birdhide. Wood Sandpiper’s in various locations. Australian and Hoary Head Grebe’s in large quantities. Reported by: Teresa Jack on Tuesday, October 29, 2013 ——————————————— Date: Tuesday, October 29, 2013 Location: Encounter Bay, Victor Harbor. Short-tailed Shearwater (Puffinus tenuirostris) (10) Ten passed to the South in ones and twos just offshore from Wright Island and the Bluff over a one and half hour period. There was also a “slim” Skua, probably Arctic and several Gannets. The strong southerly winds of the last few days seem to have had a pronounced effect on the Short-tailed Shearwaters. Several were seen at the same location at odd times during the day on both the 27th and the 28th while there were 3 freshly dead on the beach at the Inman River estuary on the 27th and a single bird was resting on the water inside the Murray Mouth on the 28th.
