Earlier this week BirdLife Australia released their Wetland Birds Field Guide iOS app. The app is extremely attractive and functional, providing drawings & photographs, detailed descriptions, distribution maps, endangered status and calls for the 63 non-passerine species found in and around the wetlands of South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania. These include Cranes, Storks, Egrets, Herons, Crakes, Rails, Hens, Ibis, Spoonbills, Cormorants, Waterfowl and the Shorebirds (or waders) that are commonly found away from the coast. Just a brief note to let everyone know of the great support I have received from the publishers of HBW.

I received HBW15 a couple of days ago (I subscribed later in the program) and unfortunately it had some production problems (pages cut incorrectly, ink stain on page edges).

I contacted Lynx Edicions and they asked me to cut out and send them the title pages (which happened to be the damage ones) so as to make the item “unsaleable”. They needed this to be done for insurance purposes. They were also prepared to pay for the cost of postage (it was only $7.85 so I didn’t worry about it).

In the meantime, they are despatching a replacement copy immediately.

Hard to fault service like that!

Observed a pair of falcons at Gunnamatta Ocean Beach (Victoria) on Tuesday, but can’t decide if they were Australian Hobby or Peregrine Falcon.

Hi Peter,

Sorry, I should have said that it doesn’t work with IE or Firefox. It does however work with Safari or Google Chrome.

However it relies on “touches” for navigation, and you will have to simulate these with your mouse.

With all the recent posts regarding iPhone apps, I thought I would let you know about my Oz Shorebirds app for bird identification.

It is based on the Shorebirds Identification Booklet available from BirdLife Australia, and allows you to browse 48 shorebird species by name or size. From the browse list you can view an illustration, distribution map, identification tips and a flight photo of each species.

The app is freely available to everyone interested in our migratory and resident shorebirds. It is a website, however the content will be cached on your device so that it is accessible even when the internet isn’t available. It was designed and developed by myself using the Sencha Touch Framework http://www.sencha.com/products/touch/.

*For the iPhone* The iPhone has 3G & Wi-Fi capability, and one of these needs to be available for the following:

– Point Safari at www.penboc.org.au/shorebirds/ – Tap on the “+” or “forward arrow” on the toolbar at the bottom of the Safari screen – Tap on “Add to Home Screen” and change the name to Oz Shorebirds – Tap on “Save” or “Add”

You should now have an icon on your home screen (of a Hooded Plover) that you can tap on to run the app.

*For the iPod Touch* The iPod Touch has Wi-Fi capability, so if you have access to a Wi-Fi network you can also get access to the app. Start the Settinga app, turn on Wi-Fi and connect to the Wi-Fi network:

Now do the following:

– Point Safari at www.penboc.org.au/shorebirds/ – Tap on the “+” or “forward arrow” on the toolbar at the bottom of the Safari screen – Tap on “Add to Home Screen” and change the name to Oz Shorebirds – Tap on “Save” or “Add”

You should now have an icon on your home screen (of a Hooded Plover) that you can tap on to run the app.

Start the Settings app again and turn off Wi-Fi. While is Settings check that Bluetooth and Location Services are turned off (you generally don’t need any of these on for an iPod Touch and they only drain the battery).

*For the iPad* Follow the instruction for the iPhone.

However the images are sized for devices with a smaller screen and look grainy on this.

*For Android Devices* The iPhone has 3G & Wi-Fi capability, and one of these needs to be available for the following:

– In the browser go to www.penboc.org.au/shorebirds/ – Bookmark the site in the browser – Return to the home screen – Tap & hold in empty space to bring up the menu – Tap “Shortcut” then “Bookmark” – Select the relevant bookmark
