Gooday, 60+ Fork-tailed Swifts in feeding flock between Bluefish Point and towards Heath Point on Muralug Beach, Prince of Wales Is. Qld. Date 14 January 2014. Time 0840 – 0915. Weather hot and building up for storms. Birds I estimated were the ones down low in a feeding flock. If I put my glasses up into the sky I could observe 100’s of Swifts almost naked to the eye. Gooday birding aussers, I observed 15-20 Ft Swifts with my daughter Camilla travelling in a NW direction over Muralug Beach, Prince of Wales Is. Torres Strait, Qld. Date 10 Jan. 2013 Time 18.40. Clear sky no sign of clouds or wet weather, no wind or breeze, very still conditions. Low tide. They did not seem to be feeding but continued in a Northerly direction.

Gooday, On Wed. 4 Jan. 2012 I observed 9 Fork-tailed Swifts feeding above Greenhill Fort, Thursday Is. along with some White-breasted Woodswallows. Also of note were 2 Torresian Crows that are not normally seen on TI. They may be race orru.

Yesterday 2 Dec. 2011 I was at Greenhill on Thursday Is. and witnessed approx. 200 Spangled Drongo’s flying south. I remained there for about 10 minutes before having to leave. On my departure I could see more birds coming in from the North. Weather was hot with a slight SE breeze with the birds flying low over the hill.

Gooday all, For the last week we have observed flocks of 20-40 Rainbow Bee-eaters flying South. Also joining in are small flocks of Pied Imperial Pigeons. The strong SE breeze that was blowing up until a week ago has eased off and no doubt makes conditions more favourable for the birds long journey. Especially like seeing the Rainbow Bee-eaters flying over the open sea. They announce their presence with a soft “brit, brit“call and then groups are observed flying close to the water surface in a buoyant flight. The call of the Rainbow Bee-eaters can also be heard at night. PIPs seem to be quiet with no calls heard during the observations.
