Hi all,

On Monday 18th February 2013 at approximately 11.00am on the north-western rocky shore of Tasman Island (55G 581164m E 5212841m S), Fiona Hume observed a crested penguin roosting amongst the Australian Fur Seals. Both she and I returned to the site 2 hours later to verify identification and photograph. Photographs confirmed the penguin was an adult Fiordland Crested Penguin. On Tuesday 19th February the penguin was not present. Thanks to Dr Sally Bryant for confirming our identification.

On the 5th December 2012, Dr Sue Robinson (DPIPWE) and myself observed approximately 2000 Banded Stilts at the northern end of Logan Lagoon, Flinders Island (55G 609616 E, 5552961 S). Feeding in a typical line formation in shallow water near the centre of the lagoon they were later disturbed by an unidentified raptor and seen flying in a large mixed flock with 100s of Australasian Shelducks.

Since our first sighting in February 2012 (see below), it is of note that there has been only one other sighting of Banded Stilts on Flinders Island, that of 17-19 October 2012 (DPIPWE). I spoke with the Flinders Island PWS Ranger and he was unaware of any reports and had not seen the stilts personally during the intervening period. It is unclear whether the stilts remained on the island or in the interim, they moved on. The absence of sightings may be simply due to the lack of survey effort/observations.

The previous report from 24/25th February this year is reprinted here from Yellow Throat 63, BirdLife Tasmania:

“Two thousand Banded Stilts (Cladorhynchus leucocephalus) were observed in the north-eastern bay of Logan Lagoon, Flinders Island (55 G 610615 E, 5553839 S) on 24 and 25 February, 2012. They were seen roosting in a straight line approximately 10 birds deep, 100 metres offshore, in shallow water. When feeding they moved as one group in a line, wading in the shallows. The flock was a mixture of adults in breeding and nonbreeding plumage with some juveniles. No other wader species were seen in the flock. In 2003, between 1000 and 3000 Banded Stilts were seen in this area, travelling around Cameron Inlet, Logan Lagoon and Adelaide Bay from approximately mid-January through till March–April. All other Tasmanian sightings of Banded Stilts have been in numbers fewer than 10. The observers were Liz Znidersic and Dr Sue Robinson (DPIPWE).”

Hi all,

On Tuesday 13th March, 2012 at 10.00pm, approximately 5km north east of Fingal, Tasmania on the Esk Highway, I observed a Masked Owl on the road. I had excellent views under my vehicle lights as it took flight as I slowly approached. The valley is generally farmland with significant bushland on the surrounds.

They were observed roosting in a straight line approximately 10 birds deep, 100 metres offshore in shallow water. When feeding they moved as one group in an ever changing line, wading in the shallows 100-200 metres offshore. The flock was a mixture of adults in breeding and non-breeding plumage with some juveniles. No other wader species were seen in the flock. In 2003, between 1000-3000 Banded stilts were also observed in this area, travelling between Cameron Inlet, Logan Lagoon and Adelaide Bay from approximately mid- January through till March-April. All other Tasmanian sightings of Banded Stilts have been in numbers less than 10. Observers: Liz Znidersic and Dr Sue Robinson (DPIPWE).

Hi all,

In the low coastal heath on the western side of Binalong Bay Road between Big Lagoon and Sloop lagoon 41º 12.076’S , 148º16.196’E (approx. 15 km north of St Helens, Tasmania), 3 separate sightings of Ground Parrots have occurred in the last month. The first sighting was 2 separate birds when I was with Eldert Groenewoud (Holland) and Des Wingfield (St Helens) while walking along the Old Train Line Track on the 25th July 2011 between 10.15-11.30am. The first bird flushed flew only a few meters before dropping into low (50-80cm) heath. When flushed the second time it flew about 40 meters to the eastern side of the track keeping low. The second bird was flushed about 30 meters further down the track. It flew directly to the western side of the track giving us clear views of the long tail with barring and bright green plumage. A few visits to the area in the following weeks did not produce any sightings. On the 20th August 2011 between 3.30-4.30pm, Ian May (St Helens) and I saw another Ground Parrot. It flushed at approximately 15 meters as I walked through the heath on the eastern side of the swamp.
