For those that have been there…what are some highlights at the spring/summer transition time of year, and great places to go to see Nullarbor Quail thrush (if possible), Inland Dotterel and Brush Bronzewing…? Just a quick question.. When is the best time of year to visit Esperance W.A and the Cheynes beach area? What birds are there in the area and birding hotspots/locations..?? Hi all… I thought i’d try to as briefly as i can, let you know about a few birding moments in Manila/ La mesa eco park/ tagaytay/lake taal/volcano area. For those that have already been, this will be nothing new to you, but for those that might like to keep an eye out on their trip to this area of the philippines can have some prior idea of whats around. Main birds seen in Manila metropolis when i briefly looked were…

– Pied Fantail – Eurasian Tree sparrow – Scaley breasted munia – Chestnut munia – Yellow vented bulbul

Thats about all i can recall.

For the area of Tagaytay, lake taal area, i saw….

– White breasted woodswallow – a Rainbow bee eater type looking bird that almost looks identical to the one in oz…??? – little Egret – Black crowned night heron – Whiskered tern

For the area near the base of the active volcano/caldera at lake taal and at the top of the active volcano i observed….

– Coppersmith Barbet – Black naped oriole – Pied bushchat (rather tame too) – Bright capped cisticola (rather tame) – Striated grassbird – Olive backed sunbird – Large billed crow – lowland whiteye

For the area at La mesa Eco park at Quezon city/ roughly 45 minutes from metro manila (beautiful patch of forest ) i observed:

– White collared kingfisher (very vocal) – Philippine Pygmy woodpecker x1 – Pechora pipit x1 – Hooded pitta x1 – Grey? backed tailor bird x2 – Mangrove blue flycatcher (adult and young/eating termites) – Ashy ground thrush (x3) – very obliging/had a nest also

I just have to say a HUGE thankyou to Adrian constantino who was referred to us by Dion hobcroft. I posted a message on birdingaus, asking for good places to go birding in manila area and Dion kindly referred me to Adrian constantino and his wife trinket. A wonderful, VERY helpful/generous/fun couple to hang out with. We organised to meet up with them at La mesa eco park/Quezon city and i can’t praise their services enough. I saw every bird on my wish list except for Red bellied pitta…it was in hiding…Hooded pitta made up for it though which was wonderful 😀

In 6 days i saw a total of 25 new birds…not bad for not having that much time. After all, i didn’t really go there for birding, but of course it had to be part of the itinerary somewhere 😀

Hi all, I was meant to post the following on birdline but ran out of time and its a little late now, but i thought i would post the sighting of Rainbow Pitta on here for those travelling out Kakadu direction.

On the longweekend just gone…10th June i saw the Rainbow Pitta….Usually i see Rainbow Pitta at Howard Springs in Darwin EVERY time i go there, but i was very happy to stumble across one on my own the other day.  We were travelling along the Old Jim jim r.d in kakadu area, heading towards Darwin and we came to a body of water/river crossing which is the Sth Alligator river i believe its called. We crossed over the river and parked on the right hand side. On the right hand side, heading to Darwin direction, there is a stand of Bamboo. Running next to the Bamboo is a track  that leads to a gate thats shut off with a broken wooden sign next to it. I could hear the sound of something hopping along in the bamboo litter/leaf litter on the ground and suspected Rainbow Pitta. I bent down and peered between the bamboo and there was a Rainbow pitta a few feet from me in a frozen pose staring at me…it then kept hopping and  i watched it dissapear… I was rather excited to stumble across something so unexpected. Just thought i would share the location with those heading out kakadu way that are going down the Old jim jim r.d. The road was in good condition too at this time of year and the river crossing isn’t that bad/deep at all…

Hi all… An opportunity might come up next week for my family to travel to the Cobourg peninsula/Arnhem land next week… Apparently Arnhem land is the strong hold of the white throated grasswren…. I wrote a message the other day on birdingaus asking about the grasswrens at gunlom falls/kakadu and I'd like to say thank you to those that responded with helpful info …. Just wondering…has anyone been to cobourg peninsula and would know of any reliable or possible spots to see these beauties at/near the Garig Gunak Barlu National park??

Hi everyone, I’m spending the june long weekend at Gunlom/Kakadu N.T and camping for a few days. Of COURSE i would LOVE to try and track down the White throated grasswren. I’ve tryed once before and been unsuccessful…possibly because there was burning off at some stage up the top of Gunlom falls and the grasswrens havn’t returned…. Was just wondering, has anyone been to Gunlom recently and actually SEEN the White throated grasswren up there? If so…i’d love to know exactly where you saw it? 😀 😀 😀 Even if no one has seen them recently up there….if you could tell me when you last saw them and exactly where…that would be most helpful and appreciated…probably my last shot at seeing them for a long while… Also, what time of morning or avo you saw them too would help…thanks so very much

Might as well ask while i’m at it…is there a good spot there at Gunlom to see Rufous Owl and White lined honeyeater??? Thanks so much 😀 Kirri

Just wondering if anyone could help me out…. Next tuesday, my husband and i are flying to manilla/phillipines… We only have 4 days there and we were wondering…..Where would you go with such limited time that would be the most productive for birds in and around manilla? Are there any birds in the city or parks in the city that you would find some birds….?? What would you recommend out of town when it comes to bird sightings etc

Hi all, just thought i’d share my interesting find. >Was at the Leanyer Sewerage Works in Darwin on Sunday 7th April…just recently. Well, I’ve had a great time birding around Darwin in the last 3 days…. It has finally decided to rain more regularly here, making it feel like the wet season has begun just a little bit, but very delayed… Have been returning a fair bit to three places in particular in the last week… Leanyer Sewerage Works, Buffalo Creek and Fogg dam…. Am told that fogg dam is RELIABLE to see the White browed crake….keep missing that one. I did get to the Fogg dam wall at 7:30am today hoping to see a little bittern in the reeds or a Little Kingfisher, but no show. I did see Bar breasted honeyeater and Oriental Reed Warbler (new species 4 me) along with many comb crested jacana’s, Whiskered Terns and Azure Kingfisher and a very friendly Sand monitor foraging for breakfast next to our car much to my kids delight. The night before, i was at Buffalo Creek and managed to see the Large tailed nightjar (new species 4 me) hawking around the lights near the boat ramp. Leanyer Sewerage works has the usual wandering whistling ducks, jabiru and pink eared duck on occasion, pied herons, common sandpiper, common greenshank occasional pacific baza and grey goshawk and black butcherbirds…still trying to see that Little ringed plover though….. This afternoon, i was down at the jumping crocodile cruise area near the mangroves and found a Mangrove Golden Whistler (new species 4 me). Sometimes you don’t see any new species for ages, then you suddenly see a heap in succession, always great when that happens. Not that i don’t enjoy observing what i’ve already seen in the past. I’ll be off to Fogg dam wall again in the morning…6:30am is my target time to be there….just have to drag my 5 and 6 yr old out of bed too 😀 Hoping to see some target species this time Happy birding… kirri

Am planning on going to Papua New Guinea next year. Was considering doing a Birding Tour over there… Can anyone recommend a safe, reliable birding tour where the guide can tell you accurately the names of what you see? And do you reckon it’s safe for a female like me to go on a birding tour alone?

Would appreciate any feedback
