Hello John The Pizzey and Knight Digital Edition provides two methods to backup and restore your lists. One method uses iCloud, and the other uses iTunes. Only the iTunes export provides a user-accessible file. The “Sync to iCloud” and “Sync from iCloud” functions are designed for backing up and restoring your lists without linking to a PC. “Sync from iCloud” can also be used to share your lists with a second or more devices. This is a great facility for safekeeping your lists when you are on a field trip, but is not designed as a list export function. To export your lists the app makes use of standard iTunes functionality with your device connected to your PC. Although the app Help should not be expected to cover using iTunes, here is a more detailed explanation: * In the app, use the “Export” option on the My Lists page to make the lists available for iTunes. * Next connect your device to your PC and open iTunes. * Next open the device tab (iPhone or iPad) at the top right of the screen. * On the menu bar you will find a number of tabs, starting with “Summary, Info, Apps, Music….”. Open the Apps tab. * Scroll down to “File Sharing”. Find and select the Pizzey and Knight app. On the right you will see two files, “My Lists.CSV” and “PKBirds.SQlite”. * “My Lists.CSV” is a user-accessible CSV file for you to view your lists on your PC. Select this file and “Save to” your desired location. Note that it is an export-only file and is not designed for editing and re-importing to the app. * “PKBirds.SQlite” is the bird list database as used by the program. Save this file for backing up your lists. If I tell the App to export the lists to iCloud, they may indeed go somewhere, but they certainly don’t appear in iCloud. And if I tell it to “Sync to iTunes”, the files may indeed go there, but remain invisible and so impossible to access. The “Help” advice given in the App has proved less than helpful. There you are told first to choose Apps in ‘iTunes’ and then scroll down to file-sharing. Unfortunately there is no such option available; there is just a list of all the Apps you have purchased from the Store. Has anyone else managed to solve this problem? Hello Bill Yes, the app will work on an iPod Touch with iOS5 or later as the operating system. The app is fully functional, including GPS for adding locations to your bird sightings. You can also use My Location to get a bird list for your current GPS location. Regional bird lists and birding site lists are also available. The only thing that requires an online connection is the background map, which can be preloaded if you have a wifi connection. This is a last minute request for photos for the Pizzey and Knight Digital Edition. In addition to all the typical field guide info, we are illustrating the birds with photos and still need a few species. Mostly rare and vagrant species, but there are still a few regular species that we are missing.

The apps also include 250 birding sites that we are illustrating with photos as well. It’s amazing how the photos add interest to a site description – I always feel like birding when I browse through them. If you do happen to take photos on your birding trips, please consider contributing. It makes for a wonderful resource when planning your field trips, or just browsing for interest.
