Anyone have an idea what predator might take a possum & leave the fresh head behind? (Probably Ringtail or Brushtail: all that’s readable is the snout.) Hi Chris, Frank, Our local (Chatswood NSW) Powerful Owls are seen holding Brushtails from time to time but Ringtails are their staple. Judging by the quantity of jaw bones in their pellets they eat a lot of possum heads. Over the past 10 years of observing them at their day roosts & nest hollows I have never found a possum head, & only occasionally a small bit such as a foot. Hi Frank Just a niggle – although Greater Gliders look big, they are all fluff! I would think if you are talking about adult possums, taking a Brushtail would be a much more difficult and dangerous task for a Powerful Owl than taking a Greater Glider or Ringtail. Cheers, Chris. However, it is also the behaviour of predatory mammals. I have seen the faces of rats that have been left by cats, which ate the rest of the body. So may be feral cats, foxes? On a BOCA Outing at Linton , Vic., I found the complete mask of a Brush-tail Possum – just the face; the rest of the skull and contents had been eaten. Locals told us this was typical behaviour for a Powerful Owl.
