Hi all,
A friend and I have just been discussing the best time of month to go owl prowling. She said that her belief was that dark nights, maybe around the time of the new moon, were best to find owls. When I have gone out, which is not often, I have picked a time with clear sky and close to a full moon.
Now, maybe my approach is like the old joke where the best place to look for a lost coin is under the light where it is easier to see, rather than where the coin was dropped BUT, is there a consensus out there – a dark night or a full moon? Or is it like all birdwatching; just a matter of being at the right place at the right time and hoping that the bird also knows it is the right place and right time?
cheers

Cold, wet and windy – urrgh. Mild, still and dry – beautiful. A bit of moonlight doesn’t hurt at all. A bit of good luck is always welcome, but reward mostly comes from persistence.
Hi Jenny
gary wright here from Broome connection although I am now back in Wilmington SA. Although for example barn owls can hunt successfully in pitch black rooms owls are more active on moon light nights so presumably they would be easier to see for two reasons! Can’t remember where I heard this, maybe from david Fleay’s Nightwatchmen of bush and plain book.
