Dear all,
My piece on the recent brouhaha over the irruption of Princess parrots to the west of Alice Springs has been posted at the ABC’s Unleashed.
You can see it here: http://www.abc.net.au/unleashed/42384.html
Please leave a comment if you have any thoughts, suggestions or corrections – I think that this story has a fair way to run yet…

A great article, Bob. It’s informative and well written.
I must say that my own opinion has shifted on this issue as more information and explanations have been given. At first, I didn’t realise the sites were on Freehold land – and an awareness of the significance of the area gradually emerged. You article certainly helps us understand the cultural, natural, and archeological significance of the area.
I’d strongly urge all birding-aus members to read the article, and the comments that follow. Thankfully the number of moronic responses is very low, while most of the comments at least show a little thought.

Thanks to Denise & Laurie for your thoughts. From Laurie’s comments I just note that there is always more that you can put in a piece – and only so much room. And I agree with your comments about cultural issues that may take some time to resolve or work our way through – similarly in relation to future tours undertaken by or with the TO’s – there are already some indications that they will look at more trips in the New Year.
And I note that Denise did make a long thoughtful comment on BA earlier re her own experiences with family from western Arnhem land and I look forward to her contribution in the comments for the article at Unleashed.
Cheers and again, thanks,

It’s an interesting piece Bob. The front end is good, but I think you could have gone a bit further with your commentary. It would have been helpful if there had been a few extra paragraphs discussing the access fee, the way in which the authorised visits were conducted, the number of birders who participated in those visits, and a summary of their experience.
The issue of incipient racism is a difficult one to resolve. E-mail is a notorious medium for misunderstanding. Whether or not it is founded, the charge of racism is a “frog pond stopper” [the action by an observer that results in the immediate suspension of frog calls].
I think the Princess Parrot irruption has raised a number of cultural issues that will take a bit of time to resolve. I think an ongoing dialogue between traditional owners and the “birding community” may be mutually beneficial.
Regards, Laurie.
