Birdline South Australia Weekly Update

Birdline South Australia Published sightings for the week ending 28 Dec 2014. Sun 28 Dec Grey Plover, Great Knot, Eastern Curlew Bald Hill Beach Amongst Sharpies and stints at a high tide roost were 30 Grey Plovers, 5 Great Knots, 3 Eastern Curlews and 2 Red Knots. Other waders included turnstones, Curlew Sandpipers, Bar-tailed Godwit, Greenshank, Pied Oystercatchers and Banded Stilts. Also an Inland Thornbill, ridiculously, in a mangrove over the water. Paul Taylor Sat 27 Dec Spotted Nightjar Private farming property, 14 kms SW of Balaklava Alarm calls by Willie Wagtail and White-plumed Honeyeater drew my attention to a Spotted Nightjar roosting on ground. Other birds nearby included White-Browed, Masked and Dusky Woodswallows with fledged young, 2 pairs of bee-eaters feeding young in nest tunnels, more than 20 Elegant Parrots, and a pair of White-backed Swallows, which nest regularly here. Paul Taylor Tue 23 Dec Brown Quail “The Rocks Reserve”, 10 kms east of Balaklava Brown Quail heard calling and 2 birds seen. Also a few Reed Warblers feeding young, 2 Dusky Moorhens with half grown chicks, and 4 Brown Treecreepers which is near their western limit. Paul Taylor
