Birdline Central & Southern Queensland Published sightings for the week ending 26 Oct 2014. Sun 26 Oct Yellow billed spoonbill Noosa Heads–Jabiru Park/Fearnley hide 1 in front of Fearnley hide 11:15am, flew towards Noosa-Cooroy rd but not relocated from car park. Also male Cotton Pygmy- goose from hide. Chris Attewell Black-necked Stork Minnippi Parklands 1 on west side of Island this morning. Stuart Pickering Sat 25 Oct Channel-billed Cuckoo Wecker Road, opp Citipointe School, beside Bulimba Creek Two Channel-billed Cuckoo calling for 10 minutes. I was watching/photographing my grandson play cricket so didn’t get a close photo. One Channel-billed Cuckoo went one way and the other in the opposite direction. Judy Leitch Fri 24 Oct Collared Kingfisher Guyatt Park, St Lucia Well upstream. The bird alighted on a yellow buoy from near the ferry terminal where it was buzzed by swallows. It then flew across the river alongside the ferry on which I was travelling and landed in stunted mangroves close to the West End terminal. Andrew Stafford Red-necked Avocet, Marsh Sandpiper, Curlew Sandpiper, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper Sandgate–Dowse Lagoon Good birds on the water this morning. Further to prior reports, Avocet numbers are now up to 3 – northern end. 2 Marsh Sandpipers – the first for a few years, at least 19 Sharp-tailed Sandpipers and now 2 Curlew Sandpipers, all towards the southern end. Plus the usual 3 Lathams and 2 Glossy Ibis. Ged Tranter Wed 22 Oct white-throated needletails Cootharaba, Sunshine Coast, QLD 6 white-throated needletails flying around on our property today. Donna Tomkinson Peregrine Falcon Metroplex Wetlands Perched on lighting structures under gatewat bridge northbound span Chris Attewell Red-necked Avocet Sandgate–Dowse Lagoon Single bird with stilts early this morning Chris Attewell Tue 21 Oct White-throated Needletails Carindale, 8 Stanmere St 10 flying around and generally heading SE at approx 7:30 am Sheryl Keates Black -necked Stork Parklakes Wetlands (Bli Bli) 6pm- largest pond.-+two Lathams Snipe Ross Sinclair Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo Rockhampton Kershaw Gardens Observed 10 RTBC feeding in the gardens then flying into a tall gum tree, after being disturbed by a passing dog. Stephen Gallivan Plumed Whistling Duck O’Shanesy Park, Rockhampton Some 60+ birds observed at this location, also observed were 70+ Magpie geese, 2 pairs of Cotton pygmy geese. Stephen Gallivan Mon 20 Oct Large-tailed Nightjar Maroochy Wetland Sanctuary, Bli Bli Single bird heard in carpark at 6.30pm, then flew over observers into Sanctuary where continued to call. Searched using spotlight but unable to locate. Call (continuous “chop chop chop”) checked to confirm ID. Not often seen this far south. Russ Lamb & Pieter de Groot (Netherlands) Pacific Baza Nudgee Waterhole Reserve Out with Wife and Grand children on Aussie backyard bird count John Dennison Sun 19 Oct Leaden Flycatcher Sandy Camp Road Wetlands All territorial pairs, no Satin Flycatchers seen. Nikolas Haass & Raja Stephenson White-throated Nightjar; Owlet-nightjar; Boobook; Barn Owl and Nankeen Night-Heron; Gap Creek Rd Stopping near the top of Gap Creek Rd in the early morning, we heard White-throated Nightjar, Owlet-nightjar and Boobook. A Tyto owl also gave a harsh screech, but it was fairly distant. Later that night we had good, albeit brief, views of a Barn Owl (both perched and in flight). A Nankeen Night-heron was seen well at the same site – a heavily vegetated creek about 100m before the carpark if you’re coming from Brookfield Rd side. Elliot Leach; Louise Ashton; Chris Burwell White-backed Swallow Junction of Jamiesons’ and Burgess’ Rds, Lockyer Valley First seen by Chris Burwell in flight above the fields adjacent to Lockyer Creek at around 1 pm yesterday. Two birds were seen well and confirmed as White-backed Swallows by all three observers. A third bird looked promising, but remained behind the creek-side trees and gave only fleeting views.
