The following is a digest of Sightings Reported on Birdpedia for the period Monday, December 30, 2013 to Sunday, January 5, 2014: Area: SA Location: On our property at Rockleigh Crimson Rosella (Platycercus elegans) (20) We have a very small shallow pool made from the bottom of a plastic 44 gallon drum, filled with the run-off from the rainwater tank. There is not much surface water around at this time of year. At dusk about 12 juvenile crimson rosellas flew in and took it in turns to have a bath and a drink, perching in-beween times on the dead flower spike of an aloe or on the carry bars on our car, or on the veranda roof (with only their tails visible). A bit of squabbling went on, but they mostly took in turns. When they had finished it was the turn of the adults, about 8 of them. We watched them for about 15 minutes, not daring to move even inside the shed. The least movement from us, and they were off. Reported by: Michael Wood on Tuesday, December 31, 2013 ——————————————— Date: Monday, December 30, 2013 Location: Pareora Farm, Port Wakefield Letter-winged Kite (Elanus scriptus) (5) On a second visit to the location we managed to get good views and photographs of the birds that were roosting in a dead tree. Four were with two Black shouldered kites and a fifth bird was in a separate tree about 500 metres away. The property owner is very obliging and is welcoming birders to visit and see the birds and sign the visitor book. Black-shouldered Kite (Elanus axillaris) (2) With four of the LWK’s Australian Pratincole (Stiltia isabella) (5) Five birds seen in a paddock of pea stubble. One pair had two small chicks. The property owner may ask birders not to drive into this paddock now she is aware of the presence of chicks. Black Kite (Milvus migrans) (100+) On a previous visit two days ago there were 150+ black kites roosting in trees behind the homestead. At 7am they took flight and went across to the local abattoir to join others…possibly 200 in total. Fewer birds were seen today.
