List of NSW National Parks for “conservation” shooting

Hello Birding-Aus people,

The NSW Government is still considering which National Parks in which “conservation” shooters will be allowed. The list below is taken from the Environment Departments website, http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/pestsweeds/spc.htm It is current as of January 17.

Sir Humphrey Appleby would be proud of the euphemism “Supplementary Pest Control Program”.

Cheers,

Jim Smart East Maitland NSW

    Hi Carl,

Sandra confirmed it was Binya S.F. so I must have been referring to signs directly adjacent to Cocopara.

    Both sites are IBAs however….

    Charles,

Interesting that signs are being placed in NPs now saying that shooting is permitted. The Legislation clearly states that shooting in NPs will only be allowed from March. Looks like some nimrods have decided to get in early.

    Cheers,

    Carl Clifford

I didn’t see any shooting signs at Cocopara in Dec, but they are certainly at Binya (state forest, where shooting IS permitted) – which is immediately adjacent to Cocopara. so for years now it’s always been a problem that shots from Binya could easily hit something/someone in Cocopara. At the time I encountered someone with a rifle at Wattle Dam in Binya, firing off a lot of shots – the dam is only 100m or so from the narrow dirt road which separates Binya from Cocopara sandra h, canberra

    Hi Jim,

    I was at Cocopara N.P. on 26th and 27th December 2012.

There were several “shooting permitted” signs up.

So have they made their minds up about some of those Parks listed?

It was great birding at Cocopara…..(couple of lifers for me).

I did not see any “shooting permitted” signs in Barrington Tops N.P. in November 2012.

Heading to Nightcap N.P. tomorrow (although think it may be closed) so will look for “shooting permitted” signs pending ability to gain access.

Regarding the “pests”. I have seen a couple of VERY large cats at Nightcap during my 30+ visits over the last 15 years.

A ground dweller, Emerald Dove used to be fairly common there in the 90s early 00s but I have not seen one there for several years….

And a side note – I’ve searched long and hard in the remaining Big Scrub (lowland sub-tropical rainforest) for the Coxen’s Fig Parrot in Nightcap! But have never found one.

    Cheers,

    Charles Hunter Bronte, Sydney

Does the term “Supplementary Pest” refer to hunters?
