Nikon Coolpix camera P510

I am looking for a camera with a good focal range and light in weight. I note the Nikon P510 weighs only 555g. and has a 42x optical zoom which is the equivalent to that of 24-1000mm in a 35mm format. It also has vibration reduction by means of lens shift. I know it will not take photos as clear as an SLR with different lens (I do have a Nikon SLR but it is getting too heavy for me) but the photos should be able to identify birds. It may also be able to be used as a telescope but would use up batteries.

Has anyone any experience with this camera for taking photos of birds or even bird watching or has any other recommendations for a light weight camera with a good zoom for bird photos. ===============================

I was recently in the market for a “super zoom” camera and the Nikon P510 fits into this category. Others that I considered were the Canon SX40HS, Panasonic FZ-150 and Sony HX200V. After a lot of online research (eg. dpreview.com, digitalcamerareview.com, photographyblog.com & pocket-lint.com) I narrowed it down to the Panasonic or Sony.

Go and have a look at them all in a store and see which ones feels the most comfortable, just like you would with a pair of binoculars.

In the end I settled for the Sony, which I purchased online from digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au for ~$550 including a genuine second battery. Used it to get some good photos of the Oriental Pratincole that was at the WTP recently.
