More bird guide apps available

G’day all

The people behind the ‘Morcombe eGuide to Australian Birds’ and the ‘SASOL eBirds of Southern Africa’ have released two new apps for iPhone/iPad/Ipod Touch and Android devices.

For Apple devices:

the Middle East app (800 species) can be found at:

http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/eguide-to-birds-middle-east/id542597722?mt=8

and the Indian app (1300 species) is at:

http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/eguide-to-birds-indian-subcontinent/id530104501?mt=8

$21.99 each

For Android devices go to:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=mydigitalearth.com&start=12&num=12

(they cost about $1 more)

I have no commercial interest in these products. I just reckon they are great tools and everyone should have them!

    G’day all

The plates in most apps are the same as the book they are based on. The exception I’m aware of is the iBird series which doesn’t have related books and uses relatively unknown artists (although I reckon most of the plates are fine on my iPod Touch).

I’ve noted a bug in the Middle East guide. There are a few species (13 that I’ve noticed) where the underlying database matches the illustration to the next species (see Semi-collared Flycatcher which gives the correct plate but the text for Nile Valley Sunbird).

Another point to note is that the India guide has no calls. Hopefully they will come in a future upgrade. The more mature guides in this series (SASOL Southern Africa and The Morcombe Guide) have a few extra features like searching on characters and the ability to limit yourself to a geographical region. Again – hopefully these will come to the new apps.

As with all field guides we should send errors and bug reports to the publishers:

    http://www.mydigitalearth.com

    in this case.

    Cheers Steve
