RFI Tyto Wetlands Ingham QLD

Hi Ed, You need to contact Tyto Tony (Tony Ashton) who has a magnificent blog on the birds of Tyto (search for Tyto Tony on Google blogs). He is a New Zealander who rides his pushbike around the wetland most mornings – I usually go and wait for him to turn up. He doesn’t believe there have been any Grass Owls there for years, (despite the publicity at the Visitors’ Centre) and has done terrific work on the Little Bitterns that are resident there. Scan his blog for what is and isn’t likely to be found. His knowledge of the place is unequalled.

Hi all, If there are any Tyto Wetland experts out there I’d be really grateful for a bit of info on some target species that are present/possible. I will be visiting the wetlands next weekend with some overseas journalists as part of a trip to FNQ to follow the routes & app launched by Bird Trails – Tropical Queensland. The target species in question are: White-gaped HoneyeaterCrimson FinchWhite-browed CrakeWhite-browed RobinKing QuailRed-backed ButtonquailPale-vented Bush-hen Also any info on spotlighting in the area – especially for Grass Owls, Masked Owls and Large-tailed Nightjars. Looking at previous reports from the area I suspect some of the above are very common and some very tough. Thanks very much in advance, Cheers, Ed
