Birding for Devils

Good afternoon

I don’t know if anybody has seen this http://www.birdingfordevils.com.au/

but this chap is trying to see as many birds as possible over a year and he is pretty serious as of the end March he has seen 452 from the start of this year. His name is John Weigal and he was on the Port Fairy Pelagic in March. Also I have put a couple of shots up from Port Lincoln Nat Park in early March http://barraimaging.com.au/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=lastup

Kindest Regards

Geoff Jones

    Hi Geoff,

Ruth and I met John on the most recent Portland pelagic, on which he added at least White-fronted Tern to his list. John is an extremely pleasant and likeable bloke and whilst he has taken on doing a Big Year he appeared somewhat nonchalant about it (although, I know he is really taking the effort quite seriously!)

We certainly wished him good luck. I tried to point him in the direction of a reasonably reliable Lewin’s Rail at Portland, but he tells me that he managed to hear it, but not see it – so no tick for him…

John’s strategy for his big year is to tackle the more “difficult” sites first, places like the Torres Strait islands, Christmas and Cocos Islands, Iron Range and so on, then work his way through the “easier” areas. The reason for this approach is it gives him the opportunity to revisit the difficult sites multiple times during the year, if he misses any birds on the first attempt.

Looking at his list on his website, he is up to 485 species – not bad considering it is only mid-April.

We did tell him to watch out, because even if he gets Sean’s record, Ruth and I will be after his record at some stage in the near future 😉

    Anyway, good luck John!

    Hi Richard,

Yes, I forgot to mention that in my previous post. John is the John Weigel from the Australian Reptile Park.
