Zitting Cisticola

Hi all,

As my Townsville trip was pretty much a wash-out there is very little to say about the birds.

For the Birding Aus archive, and the interest of anyone going to Townsville in the near future, the only target bird I found was the Zitting Cisticola. I drove down Hodel Rd at Giru to a sign on the right that reads “Wildlife Refuge Carrick Plains”. To the right of the road is tall green grassland and on the left there is rough grassland and a bit of a track that seemed to head to a house. Both Zitting and Golden-headed Cisticola were singing strongly at this location. At about 1500 the Zitting Cisticolas started doing display flights and calling over the rough grassland. The weather was totally overcast and raining heavily.

cheers

Hi Jenny, This is a reliable site for Zitting Cisticola and has been for the last few years. They are also present much of the way to the boat ramp at the end of the road (which becomes Morris Creek Road). From about January on they do display flights.
