G’day all,
I’ve been sent a very distant picture of a falcon by a local birder here in Alice.
The image is pretty poor but I can’t make out any hint of a sub-terminal band on the tail. Does anyone want to set me straight before I get too excited?
You can find the picture at the following link; http://www.comebirdwatching.blogspot.com.au/p/id-help.html
Thanks in advance for any words of advice or ridicule 😉
Cheers,
Chris Watson Alice Springs

G’day Chris,
Not a lot of detail in this out of focus photo but my vote would be for a pale Brown Falcon. Structurally the body isn’t relatively wide enough and head not quite big enough for a Grey Falcon, but the most obvious problem to me are the warm brown tones especially the dark features in the lesser under-wing coverts and the patch at the position of the thigh, these are all perfect for Brown Falcon.
Cheers Jeff.
Chris In the case of falcons, I’ve found helpful to watch their flight pattern. This is one of the ways I identify Grey Falcon. Most cameras take short movies these days, so put the word out! Regards
