    Hello Wayne

Yes, you are correct. Your photograph is an adult Southern Black-Backed Gull. It was commonly known by this name until the early 80’s.

Also known as Dominican Gull and more recently in Australia as Kelp Gull, this is (for now) the accepted common name.

    Regards

    Hi Wayne and John,

Plumage and bare parts fit for adult Kelp Gull. Head shape and thick bill indicate male.

    Cheers,

    Nikolas
