Night Parrot Qld Govt press release

It is disturbing to see a press release issued by Queensland Government, wrongly acknowledging a “team of scientists” for the rediscovery of Night Parrot. The full credit for rediscovery of Night Parrot all goes to John Young and nobody else. It was because of Johns ornithological and bush skills, his incredible experience and relentless determination . . . → Read More: Night Parrot Qld Govt press release

Silver Gull with protuberance from lower mandible

I have a couple of photos of a Silver Gull taken on The Strand in Townsville recently which has a protuberance from its lower mandible. Does anyone know what it could be? I was interested to note that, despite this malformity, this gull was the dominant bird in the flock. He stood next to my . . . → Read More: Silver Gull with protuberance from lower mandible

Western Australia trip report Part 2 – the south-west

After the conference at Rottnest I had managed to organise three and a half full days birding to try and see as many of the south-west specials as I could. I got off the Rottnest ferry in the late morning, grabbed a hire car and headed straight down to Cheynes Beach. Western Australia trip report Part 1 – Rottnest Island

I recently put out a call for an RFI for the south-west so I think it’s only right that I repay all the good advice I got by providing a trip report. The opportunity to go to a conference on Rottnest Island provided the chance to do some birding. Having never visited Western Australia before, . . . → Read More: Western Australia trip report Part 1 – Rottnest Island

My Bird Bath

My back yard bird bath attracts a steady number of birds wanting to drink and bathe. I’ve posted a few that I saw on just one day. Mostly common suburban birds, introduced and native but that’s birding for you in residential areas. Black Noddy

Watched a juvenile Black Noddy fishing with 3 Common Terns and a group of Crested Terns at the mouth of the Clarence River Monday morning (yesterday) about 0900. There was much dolphin activity in the area – presumed there was a large school of fish. RFI Banded Stilt

Thanks again to everyone who helped me find Freckled Ducks. I was finally successful at Ballarat, and I found a single Blue-billed Duck at Werribee the day before.
