telescope replies

Thanks to all those who replied with good information on telescopes. Clearly, they are a whole world in themselves. I have a lot to look into and think about, and I will have a serious go at it. Subantarctic Shearwater

The IOC has just accepted the split of Subantarctic Shearwater from Little Shearwater. It will be included in the next update (IOC5.4). I have Googled it. It appears to be the New Zealand birds, but it also mentions that it breeds in the southern Atlantic and Indian Oceans. So is this the Australian species. . . . → Read More: Subantarctic Shearwater

telescopes

I am thinking of getting a telescope for birding. I’ve not had one before and know little about them. Of course, it has to be small enough to carry, but good enough to see further than my binoculars. Any suggestions will be gratefully received. Stephen Birding-Aus mailing list Birding-Aus@birding-aus.org To change settings or unsubscribe visit: . . . → Read More: telescopes

Robins and currawongs in the Victorian high country

“The miracle of the “Swallows” of Capistrano takes place each year at Mission San Juan Capistrano, on March 19th, St. Joseph’s Day.” They’re not swallows as in the famous story, but Flame Robins returned to the Victorian high country yesterday in significant numbers. A week ago I saw no robins at Mt Buller. On Saturday . . . → Read More: Robins and currawongs in the Victorian high country

Cockatoos and Corellas nesting in non trees.

Years ago I saw Corellas nesting in the Limestone Cliffs along the lower Murray River, when boating on the river, I think it was near Mannum S.A. On a trip across the Nullarbor in 2011 Galahs were nesting in the cliffs along the Coast at the start of the Great Australian Bight, there were no . . . → Read More: Cockatoos and Corellas nesting in non trees.

SYDNEY PELAGIC TRIP REPORT – SATURDAY 22 AUGUST 2015

OVERVIEW This trip was a re-run of the 8 August trip that had been postponed due to poor conditions offshore (wave heights had been reported at 5.5 metres by the offshore wave recording buoys apparently). As Roger McGovern was otherwise engaged, I was co-opted in to write the trip report – apologies if some of . . . → Read More: SYDNEY PELAGIC TRIP REPORT – SATURDAY 22 AUGUST 2015
